Lake Shore Drive

With sixteen stories of apartments, Jack Vandertote’s building on Lake Shore Drive resembled an unnaturally tall French château. Beginning on its uppermost levels, the highest of which was their goal, three completely useless fairytale-style towers sprouted up toward a mansard roof. To Durand’s eyes, the structure looked ludicrous, a cacophony of old and new he could not care for. Americans were strange, he thought, perpetually torn between leaping into the modern world and toadying up to the past.

Durand liked things to be one or the other.

“Pull in here,” he said to Ben, having decided to let the human operate the car. He was better at it than Durand, though Durand knew he would improve with practice—preferably without the Fitz Clare girl chattering next to him. Sometimes Durand thought humans needed instruction in being quiet.

Ben stopped the car beneath a row of newly budding trees. He hadn’t parked directly in front of the building entrance, but Durand could see the door from their position across the street. To their right, a well-groomed park formed a greensward between the road and the huge body of water that was Lake Michigan. This aspect of the city Durand approved of. Though sadly bereft of mountains, it reminded him of Lake Geneva in his homeland. His memories of that were pleasant, but he pushed them away from him.

“Turn off the headlamps,” he said.

Ben did so, leaving the interior of the auto lit only by streetlights.

“What now?” Sally asked from her princess throne.

“Now we wait,” Durand said, knowing he had to answer. However silly Sally was, the others wouldn’t tolerate him disrespecting her. “The fair is open after dark, and its grounds are an easy walk from here. With such a feast spread before them, the odds are slim that Frank and Li-Hua won’t be hunting there tonight. Once we see them leave, we can set up in their penthouse.”

“Like an ambush.” Sally twisted in her seat to face Durand. Ben turned at the same time, as if the pair were connected by invisible strings. Pen, Durand noticed, had the presence of mind to maintain her watch on their enemies’ front door. When Sally’s little brow furrowed, he half expected Ben to echo the expression.

“Yes? ” Durand prompted, figuring he might as well get Sally’s next question over with.

“Won’t they kill someone if they hunt? “

“Not necessarily,” Durand said. “But they may.”

“So while we’re sitting here waiting in our ambush...”

“Yes,” he confirmed. “An innocent human may be dying.”

Sally sucked in a breath of dismay.

“We can’t follow them to the fair,” Graham said before his sister could object. “They’d have no trouble disappearing into the crowds, and we’d risk tipping them off that we’re on the trail. Besides which, the fight would be very public. This might not be a perfect plan, but it’s the best we have.”

Sally twisted her lips into a shape no upyr mouth would have formed. To Durand’s astonishment, she didn’t voice her protest, just jerked her head in grudging acceptance and looked away.
